Data review: rates to sanity-check
Rows that look off, disagree with the report text, rest on very few responses, or sit far from other states. Nothing here has been changed from the source; this page just points at what deserves a second look.
54 rows with a specific concern · 13 more cross-state outliers (more than 40% from the median of state averages for the same job) · 77 more with fewer than 5 responses or no count published. Files: review.json · extraction_log.json · rates.csv

4. What was left out during extraction
Values were copied from each PDF’s text. These lines were deliberately skipped (withheld by the survey, too few responses to publish, not a dollar rate, material prices, worksheet examples). No numbers were estimated to fill gaps.
| State | What was left out | Lines |
|---|---|---|
| IA | unparsed numeric line | 5 |
| IN | excluded: not a $ rate or no data | 3 |
| MO | excluded: Table anecdotal medians | 13 |
| MO | excluded: share-of-crop arrangement | 2 |
| ND | withheld or no reports in source | 28 |
| NE | informational note | 4 |
| NE | no unit in title | 1 |
| NE | statewide range unreadable | 1 |
| OH | excluded: not a custom machine/field service | 5 |
| OH | excluded: tile material price, not a custom service | 8 |
| OH | supplementary statistic, not a dollar rate | 10 |
| OH | too few responses: no average published | 7 |
| OH | unparsed line | 12 |
| WI | excluded: maximum one-way mileage statistic | 3 |
| WI | note: Table heading says while all other tables say | 1 |
5. States not included
- South Dakota: No statewide survey in about two decades. SDSU Extension is collecting a new survey; results expected fall 2026.
- Michigan: The MSU 2026 Custom Work Rates report (Dec 2025) is a cost-based estimate built from a machinery-cost model, not a survey of rates charged. Not mixed in with survey data; could be added later as a clearly-labeled “cost estimate”.
