Minnesota and Illinois: no state survey, Iowa rates shown
Neither state publishes a survey of custom rates. Their pages on this site show the Iowa State University survey rates listed above, clearly labeled, with every source link pointing to the Iowa PDF. No separate Minnesota or Illinois data rows exist, and neither state is counted in any comparison, lowest/highest figure or state count.
- Minnesota: The University of Minnesota does not publish a custom rate survey. It publishes Machinery Cost Estimates (engineering-based ownership and operating costs, last updated June 2024) and the MACHDATA spreadsheet for figuring your own machine costs. - Illinois: The University of Illinois does not publish a custom rate survey. farmdoc publishes Machinery Cost Estimates for field, harvest, tractor and forage operations, updated every two years (latest September 1, 2025; next planned late summer 2027). farmdoc notes these are costs without a return to the operator, so an amount should be added when using them to set custom rates. farmdoc Machinery Cost Estimates (Management section) · farmdoc daily: Machinery Cost Estimates for 2025
- On Iowa’s survey as a regional reference: Kent Thiesse, “Tips on finalizing 2025 farm machinery custom rates,” Agweek, Nov. 13, 2025, calls the Iowa survey “probably the most widely used custom rate information available in the upper Midwest.” Agweek
Not included (yet)
- South Dakota: No statewide survey in about two decades. SDSU Extension is collecting a new survey; results expected fall 2026.
- Michigan: The MSU 2026 Custom Work Rates report (Dec 2025) is a cost-based estimate built from a machinery-cost model, not a survey of rates charged. Not mixed in with survey data; could be added later as a clearly-labeled “cost estimate”.
